Surplus income — frequently asked questions

What is surplus income and why does it matter?

Surplus income is what you have left each month after paying essential household bills. It matters because it shapes which debt solutions fit you: a DRO needs under £75/month surplus, while bankruptcy and an IVA use surplus to set any monthly payments you make.

How is surplus income calculated?

Take your total monthly income (wages, benefits, pensions) and subtract essential spending — rent or mortgage, council tax, utilities, food, transport and minimum debt payments. The figure left is your surplus. This calculator does that for you in seconds, free and privately.

What surplus do I need to qualify for a DRO?

To qualify for a Debt Relief Order your surplus income must be under £75 a month, your debts under £30,000 and your assets under £2,000. If your surplus is above £75, a DRO is unlikely and bankruptcy or an IVA are usually the options to look at next.

Does surplus income affect bankruptcy?

Yes. In bankruptcy, if your surplus income is above a set threshold the official receiver can set up an Income Payments Agreement (IPA) requiring monthly payments for up to three years. If your surplus is low or nil, you usually make no monthly payments.

Is this surplus income calculator free and private?

Yes. The calculator is free, needs no sign-up, and your figures stay in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere unless you create an account and choose to save. You can use it as often as you like before deciding on a route.
