Before you apply for bankruptcy — a checklist
A simple checklist you can work through before you file for bankruptcy.
Two weeks before filing
- List all your creditors — full names, addresses, account references, balances
- List all your assets — property, vehicle, savings, pensions, valuables over £500
- Complete an income & expenditure sheet — run our surplus calculator
- Get free debt advice — StepChange or National Debtline as a minimum
- Check whether you might be eligible for a DRO instead (cheaper if applicable)
One week before filing
- Stop using credit cards and do not take on new credit
- Check your benefit entitlement — you may be eligible for benefits that boost income
- Do not pay back preferred creditors (especially friends or family)
- Open a new basic bank account at a bank you do not owe money to
- Move any direct debits or benefits to the new account
Days before filing
- Have your National Insurance number handy
- Check the £680 fee — and whether you are eligible for fee remission
- Print or save all important documents — ID, recent statements, court papers
- Tell your employer only if necessary — many professions do not need to know (check your contract)
- Set aside money for essentials (you will need access to living costs after filing)
On the day of filing
- Complete the online application on gov.uk
- Pay the fee (or get the waiver)
- Save your application reference safely
- Note any deadlines for follow-up information
Why this preparation matters
Bankruptcy may feel like a big step, but the documents you prepare here are the same documents you would need for an IVA, DMP or DRO too. Either way, you will have your financial picture organised — which is the foundation for getting out of debt.
Use our Filing Tracker to work through these steps and keep a countdown to your filing day.
