Month-by-month timeline
Month 1
OR interview
A phone call with the Official Receiver about your finances, debts and assets. Have your documents ready.
Month 3
IPA setup
If you have surplus income, an IPA is agreed. Monthly direct debit begins. Reporting obligations start.
Month 6
Routine settling
Keep paying IPA, paying surviving debts, and reporting income changes. Stay cooperative.
Month 9
Annual review soon
OR reviews your IPA. Re-check your surplus using updated SFS figures.
Month 12
Discharge
Most debts wiped. Bankruptcy restrictions mostly lifted (except directorship & £500 credit disclosure).
OR interview preparation
The Official Receiver will interview you (usually by phone). Be ready.

Do's & Don'ts
- Report income changes (up or down) to the OR promptly
- Keep paying surviving debts (CMS, fines, student loans)
- Cooperate fully with the OR - keep appointments, respond to letters
- Keep clear business and personal records
- Take on new credit over £500 without disclosing your bankruptcy
- Act as a company director during bankruptcy
- Hide or undervalue assets
- Make preferential payments to specific creditors before / during bankruptcy
When to report changes
Tell your OR about any income change as soon as it happens. Here is what follows.
OR recalculates IPA — payment may rise.
OR may reduce or pause IPA payments.
OR reviews new budget and adjusts IPA accordingly.
